Healthchecks

Healthchecks

Healthchecks is an open-source cron job and background task monitoring service written in Python and Django. It listens for HTTP pings from your scheduled jobs and sends alerts when a ping is late or missing, giving you a simple, self-hosted safety net for every cron job, backup script, and background task you rely on.

Key Features

  • Dead-man’s switch monitoring — Each check expects a periodic ping; if it doesn’t arrive on time, Healthchecks alerts you.
  • Flexible notification channels — Email, Slack, Telegram, Discord, webhooks, and 40+ other integration options.
  • Grace periods and schedules — Configure cron expressions or simple intervals with per-check grace windows.
  • Detailed ping history — View a timeline of every ping with response codes and body size for each check.
  • Status pages — Publish public or private status pages showing the health of your services.
  • Simple ping URLs — Each check has a unique URL; integrate in seconds from cron, scripts, or monitoring tools.
  • Self-hosted — Runs on a single Docker container or bare metal; no external monitoring vendor required.

Why Use Healthchecks?

Silent cron failures are one of the sneakiest problems in server administration — jobs can fail for weeks without anyone noticing. Healthchecks gives you a free, self-hosted way to know the moment a scheduled job stops running, so you fix problems before users do.

Use Cases

  • Monitoring cron jobs, backups, and database dumps
  • Watching scheduled reports, syncs, and data imports
  • Liveness checks for long-running background workers
  • Team visibility through shared projects and status pages
