About
Our Mission
The Web Is Free is a curated directory of free, open source, and privacy-friendly software. We believe in the power of the open web — tools that respect your privacy, give you control, and don’t cost a thing.
Why We Built This
Every month, millions of people pay for software they don’t truly need. Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, subscription-based productivity tools — the costs add up. Meanwhile, there is a thriving ecosystem of open-source alternatives that are just as good, often better, and always free.
But finding them is hard. Search engines are filled with ads, sponsored content, and freemium traps. We built this directory to cut through the noise.
How We Curate
Every tool listed here has been carefully chosen for its quality, ethical approach, and commitment to user freedom. We prioritise:
- Active development — tools that are maintained and updated
- Clear licensing — no bait-and-switch or source-available tricks
- Genuine alternatives — tools that can replace paid options
- Privacy respect — no telemetry, no data mining, no lock-in
This is a living directory. If you know a tool we should add, let us know.
