VSCodium

VSCodium

Overview

VSCodium is a free, open source binary distribution of Microsoft’s VS Code, rebuilt from the same source code but with all Microsoft branding, telemetry, and proprietary licensing removed. It delivers the same powerful editing experience — IntelliSense, integrated Git, debugging, and the full extension model — without the telemetry and without the proprietary components found in the standard VS Code build.

Because it is built straight from the open source code-base (MIT-licensed), VSCodium is a natural fit for developers and organisations that want the VS Code experience while avoiding vendor telemetry and keeping everything open. Extensions are installed from the Open VSX Registry rather than Microsoft’s marketplace, and remote development over WSL, Docker, and SSH is fully supported.

This makes VSCodium a strong option for regulated industries, privacy-conscious developers, and anyone building a fully free and open source toolchain around a modern editor.

Key Features

  • No telemetry or proprietary licensing: all Microsoft telemetry and branding removed, MIT-licensed source
  • Full VS Code parity: IntelliSense, integrated Git, debugging, and the familiar UI
  • Open VSX Registry: install extensions from the open extension marketplace instead of Microsoft’s
  • Remote development: work over WSL, Docker, and SSH just like VS Code
  • Cross-platform: runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows

Use Cases

  • Development in regulated industries that forbid vendor telemetry
  • Privacy-conscious developers building a fully FOSS toolchain
  • Teams wanting VS Code parity while avoiding Microsoft branding and data collection
