FreeCol
FreeCol is a free, open-source turn-based strategy game inspired by Sid Meier’s Colonization. Starting with a single ship and a handful of settlers in 1492, you explore the New World, establish colonies, trade with Europe and the native peoples, and ultimately declare independence from your home country. It is a mature, community-driven project that has been in continuous development for over two decades and runs on any platform with a Java runtime.
Key Features
- Faithful Colonization-style gameplay — explore, settle, trade and fight your way from a lone colony to an independent nation.
- Deep colony economy — manage buildings, production, food and trade goods, and set up trade routes between your settlements.
- Diplomacy and natives — negotiate, trade, or go to war with European rivals and the indigenous nations of the New World.
- Founding Fathers — earn liberty bells to attract historical figures that grant unique national bonuses.
- Multiple European powers — play as the English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish or Russian colonies, each with its own strengths and national advantages.
- Single-player, hotseat and multiplayer — play against configurable AI opponents via network or local hotseat, with hotseat-to-network and mid-game join support.
- Built-in Colopedia — an in-game encyclopedia covering units, buildings, terrain, goods and history.
- Scenario and mod support plus a map editor — build your own maps and scenarios, or load user-made ones.
Why Use FreeCol?
FreeCol is a genuinely complete game rather than a tech demo: it has a full single-player experience, working multiplayer, a mature AI, and an active upstream that still ships development builds. Being open source, it is free of cost and DRM, has no ads or in-app purchases, and the rules and artwork can be inspected, modified and redistributed under the GPL. It is also light on hardware — a modest desktop or laptop is more than enough.
Use Cases
- Fans of Civilization and Colonization who want a free, openly licensed take on the formula.
- Linux users who want a native, packaged strategy game rather than a Windows game under emulation.
- Multiplayer sessions on a LAN or over the network with friends.
- Anyone exploring the open-source games ecosystem who wants to try, mod, or contribute to a long-running project.
