Freeciv

Overview

Freeciv is a free and open source turn-based empire-building strategy game inspired by Sid Meier’s Civilization. First started in 1996 and still actively developed, it leads a civilisation from 4000 BC into the modern era — founding cities, working the land, researching technologies and fighting or trading with rival nations. The default ruleset deliberately follows Civilization II, and the project is officially described as “a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization”.

Key Features

  • Single-player and multiplayer — play against the built-in AI opponents, over a LAN or the internet, or join one of the longturn communities where a single game can run for months on a public server.
  • Computer opponents built in — the server fills empty player slots with AI civilisations, so a full game needs no other humans.
  • Multiple rulesets — ship with the classic Civilization-style ruleset and switch to community variants that change units, technologies and game flow; ruleset tooling is part of the project.
  • Classic empire management — found and grow cities, research a technology tree, set tax, luxury and science rates, build wonders and negotiate diplomacy with rival nations.
  • Choice of map style — the screenshot above shows the hexagonal-grid client, with a scrollable world map, a mini-map for rapid navigation and tilesets that can be swapped out.
  • Plays in the browser too — Freeciv-web, the project’s HTML5 version, runs the game online with no installation.

Why Use It

It is the reference free Civilization: nearly thirty years of development, no ads, no in-app purchases, no DRM and no account required. It is genuinely cross-platform, runs on modest hardware, and because the rulesets are open and moddable you can play the classic game or a variant of it. Current stable release is 3.2.6 (4 September 2026).

Use Cases

  • Long single-player campaigns against AI civilisations, saved and resumed over weeks.
  • Multiplayer games with friends on a LAN or a hosted server, including correspondence-style longturn games.
  • Playing a full Civilization-style strategy game in a browser when you cannot install anything.
  • Learning game design and ruleset modding through an open, long-established codebase.

Platforms

Windows, macOS and Linux (official builds), plus a number of UNIX-like systems via distribution packages, and the Freeciv-web HTML5 version in a browser.

Licence

Free and open source — GNU General Public License v2.0 or later (the source headers state “either version 2, or (at your option) any later version”; a few bundled third-party components use compatible licences).

Similar Tools
