TrueNAS

TrueNAS

TrueNAS is a free and open-source Network-Attached Storage (NAS) operating system developed by iXsystems. It turns commodity x86-64 hardware into a powerful storage appliance managed from a web interface. Two editions exist: TrueNAS CORE, based on FreeBSD, and TrueNAS SCALE, based on Debian Linux — both built around the OpenZFS filesystem.

Key Features

  • OpenZFS — checksumming, snapshots, replication, compression, deduplication and RAID-Z
  • Web UI and API — manage pools, shares, users, apps and alerts from a browser
  • File sharing — SMB/CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, S3 and FTP
  • Data protection — scheduled snapshots, replication tasks, scrubs and SMART monitoring
  • Apps platform — run self-hosted services and containers (TrueNAS SCALE)
  • Encrypted datasets and role-based access control
  • Directory services — Active Directory and LDAP integration

Why Use TrueNAS?

TrueNAS is the de-facto open-source NAS platform: your data stays on your own hardware, with enterprise-grade ZFS features and no per-seat licensing. The same core is available on a free DIY install or as a supported appliance from iXsystems.

Use Cases

  • Home lab and home NAS
  • Media, backup and archival storage
  • Small-business file server
  • Virtualisation host and self-hosted app platform

Platform

x86-64 only. 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB+ and ECC memory recommended).

Licence

Free and open source, with commercial options. The operating system is free to use — TrueNAS CORE under the BSD 3-clause licence, TrueNAS SCALE under GPL/LGPL and other licences. Paid TrueNAS Enterprise appliances and support subscriptions are available for organisations that need certified hardware and SLAs.
