ReactOS

ReactOS

ReactOS is a free and open-source operating system that reimplements the Windows NT architecture from scratch, with the goal of running Windows applications and drivers without modification. Development has run for three decades, with the latest release being ReactOS 0.4.16.

Key Features

  • Windows application and driver compatibility — binary compatibility targets for Windows NT-era software, including drivers
  • Clean-room NT implementation — the Win32/NT kernel and APIs are written from scratch rather than wrapped around Linux
  • ReactOS Explorer desktop — a familiar Windows-style shell and file manager
  • Unified boot and live images — since 0.4.16 a single image serves both as installer and LiveCD
  • New graphical installer and improved video, audio, networking and storage stacks

Why Use It

ReactOS is an open-source option for running legacy Windows software — especially older DOS and Win32-era applications and hardware drivers — without a proprietary Windows licence. It is the only actively developed free software project aiming for Windows binary compatibility at the API and driver level, which also makes it useful for testing how Windows software behaves in a clean NT-compatible environment.

Use Cases

  • Legacy Windows software — run older business and productivity applications on a free platform
  • Virtual machines and retro hardware — a lightweight NT-compatible system for VMs or period-accurate PCs
  • Driver and API research — study and test Win32/NT behaviour in an open codebase

Platform

x86 (32-bit) is the primary target; the x86-64 port is in progress. Runs on bare metal and in virtual machines (QEMU, VirtualBox, VMware).

Licence

Free and open source — GNU General Public License v2.0, with some components under the LGPL and other compatible licences.
