MX Linux
MX Linux is a midweight, desktop-oriented Linux distribution built on Debian Stable, developed as a collaborative effort between the antiX and former MEPIS communities. It emphasises stability, performance and ease of use, and is offered in Xfce, KDE Plasma and Fluxbox editions. MX ships its own MX Tools suite of system utilities and can boot with either sysVinit or systemd.
Key Features
- Debian Stable base — conservative, dependable packages with long-term security support
- MX Tools — an in-house suite of utilities for installing drivers, managing users, snapshots and repairs
- Xfce, KDE Plasma and Fluxbox editions — choose by how much desktop you want
- sysVinit or systemd — pick the init system at boot time
- Live USB with persistence — run and remaster the system from a USB stick with saved changes
- Newer kernels on demand — MX Package Installer pulls backported kernels and drivers from Debian backports without mixing Debian Testing
- Fast, low-resource footprint — comfortable on older hardware
Why Use MX Linux?
MX Linux sits in the sweet spot between Debian’s reliability and a genuinely welcoming desktop. MX Tools removes the usual Debian rough edges, and the live USB persistence and remastering features make it unusually good for rescue work and portable systems.
Use Cases
- Older laptops and desktops that need a light, stable distribution
- Users who want Debian stability with current drivers and kernels available
- System rescue and portable USB environments using live persistence
