GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display editor. At its core sits an interpreter for Emacs Lisp (Elisp), which gives users complete control over the editor’s behaviour and lets them write new features in the language the editor itself is built on. It ships with file and directory management, an integrated shell, email and news reading, a calendar, Org Mode, and much more — making it less an editor and more a programmable work environment.

Key Features

  • Built-in Elisp interpreter — Extend or change any part of the editor without restarting
  • Org Mode — Structured notes, outlines, TODO lists, tables, and literate programming
  • Huge package ecosystem — Thousands of packages via ELPA and MELPA
  • Multiple major modes — Purpose-built editing for code, prose, mail, and shell
  • Real-time display — Text updates live as you type for many editing modes
  • Portability — Runs identically on virtually every Unix-like system and Windows
