Zorin OS

Zorin OS

Zorin OS is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, designed to make moving from Windows or macOS as familiar as possible. Its heavily customised GNOME and Xfce desktops include the Zorin Appearance tool, which can reshape the interface into layouts that mimic Windows, macOS or ChromeOS. A free Core edition is available to everyone, while paid Pro editions add extra desktop layouts and pre-installed creative and productivity applications.

Key Features

  • Windows-like layouts — start menu, taskbar and window controls positioned the way Windows users expect
  • Zorin Appearance — switch between Windows, macOS and ChromeOS style desktop layouts in a click
  • Ubuntu LTS base — long support windows and a very large software ecosystem
  • Windows app support — integrated Wine and Bottles tooling makes many Windows programs installable
  • Zorin Connect — link an Android phone for notifications, file transfer and remote control
  • Privacy-minded defaults — no telemetry enabled out of the box
  • Free Core edition — the full desktop at no cost, with optional paid Pro editions

Why Use Zorin OS?

Zorin OS is the least disruptive way to leave Windows. The interface is immediately recognisable, existing Windows applications often keep working, and the underlying Ubuntu base means mainstream driver and software support.

Use Cases

  • Windows users switching to Linux and wanting a familiar desktop
  • Older or low-spec PCs that benefit from the lighter Xfce-based editions
  • Schools and offices migrating away from proprietary licences

Platform

Licence

Free and open source for the Core edition, built on Ubuntu, GNOME and Xfce under the GPL and other open-source licences. The optional Pro editions are a paid one-off purchase that adds proprietary extras; Core remains fully usable at no cost.
