Ventoy

Overview

Ventoy is an open-source tool for creating bootable USB drives from ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x), and EFI files. Unlike traditional USB boot tools that require reformatting the drive each time you change the ISO, Ventoy allows you to simply copy image files directly onto the USB drive. On boot, Ventoy presents a menu listing all available images, letting you choose which one to load — without reformatting or reconfiguring the drive.

Key Features

  • Copy-and-boot workflow: No need to reformat the USB drive when switching ISOs — just drag and drop files.
  • Multi-boot support: Store dozens of ISO files on a single USB drive and pick from a boot menu.
  • Wide format support: Works with ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x), and EFI files.
  • Legacy and UEFI support: Boots on both BIOS and UEFI systems, including secure boot.
  • Persistence support: Create persistent storage for live Linux distributions.

Why Use It

Ventoy eliminates the repetitive formatting and preparation cycle of traditional USB boot tools like Rufus or balenaEtcher. Once Ventoy is installed on a USB drive, you treat it like a regular storage device — copy new ISO files whenever needed and boot them at will. This makes it indispensable for IT professionals, system administrators, and anyone who regularly tests multiple operating systems or live environments.

Use Cases

  • System administration: Carry a single USB with multiple rescue, diagnostic, and installation ISOs.
  • OS testing: Try different Linux distributions without dedicating separate USB drives.
  • IT support: Prepare a multi-boot toolkit with Windows installer, Linux live USBs, and system recovery images.
