Veloren

Veloren is a free and open-source multiplayer voxel action-adventure RPG written in Rust. Set in a vast fantasy world, it draws inspiration from Cube World, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft, and it has been in active development with a thriving player community since 2018. The latest stable release is v0.18.0 (January 2026).

Key Features

  • Procedurally generated, fully simulated world — enormous mountains, arid deserts, dense jungles and more, forming one interconnected world that keeps simulating as you play.
  • Dynamic, fast-paced combat — a wide range of weapons and play styles, with dodging, blocking, charged attacks and defensive stances.
  • Dungeons, bosses and monsters — menacing bosses and fearsome creatures wait in dungeons and hideouts, with loot and crafting recipes to find.
  • Caves and mining — delve beneath the earth to mine ore and gems in sprawling cave networks.
  • Towns, NPCs and crafting — craft equipment in towns, hold conversations with NPCs, take on hired companions and watch airships travel between sites.
  • Companions and mounts — tame wild beasts and keep them as companions or ride them across the world.
  • Multiplayer built in — adventure with friends on public servers using the official authentication server, or host your own game over LAN.
  • Open development — the whole project is public: code, artwork, music and translations are all community contributions, managed through GitLab.

Why Use Veloren?

Veloren is unambiguously free: no store, no paid edition, no in-game purchases, no account required to play single-player. The source code is licensed under the GNU GPL v3.0-or-later, which the project describes as meaning it will always stay free and open source.

Because it is a native build written in Rust, it runs well on modest hardware on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it does not phone home — the official authentication server collects no metrics and stores credentials with salted hashing.

Use Cases

  • Single-player adventuring through a procedurally generated world with quests, dungeons and boss fights.
  • Hosting a private or LAN server to play co-operatively with friends without a subscription or hosting fee.
  • Exploring or contributing to a mature open-source game project as a developer, artist, translator or playtester.

Platform

Windows · macOS · Linux (x86_64 is the main development focus; official ARM64 builds are provided for macOS and Linux)

Licence

Free and open source — GNU GPL v3.0-or-later. Free to play, modify and distribute, forever. Distributed as standalone builds or through Airshipper, the official launcher, which keeps the game up to date (stable releases age quickly and can become incompatible with public servers).
