Unciv
Overview
Unciv is a free and open source turn-based 4X empire-building strategy game — an open-source remake of Sid Meier’s Civilization V, written in Kotlin on the LibGDX engine and built for Android and desktop. You lead a civilisation from a single settler to a world-spanning empire: found cities, research technologies, expand your borders and defeat rival nations. It is fast, small, ad-free and completely free forever, designed to run smoothly even on older phones and modest desktop hardware.
Key Features
- Full Civilization-style 4X gameplay — explore, expand, exploit and exterminate across a rich tech tree, with city building, culture, diplomacy and warfare mirroring the classic Civ V formula.
- Deeply moddable — modding is a core focus: custom rulesets, units, technologies, maps, civs and scenarios can be added, shared and installed from within the game’s community.
- Network multiplayer — play against friends over the internet or a LAN via the built-in server (UncivServer), with turn-based multiplayer supported.
- Cross-platform — one codebase runs on Android (Google Play and F-Droid), Windows, Linux, macOS, Raspberry Pi, and anywhere Java is available via the executable .jar.
- Lightweight and fast — simplified 2D graphics keep it snappy even in the late game, on low-power devices and “potato” machines that would struggle with commercial strategy titles.
- No ads, no purchases, no DRM — genuinely free, with no in-app purchases, no account required and no telemetry.
- Actively developed — frequent releases (latest 4.22.8, October 2026) and a large community around one of the most-starred open-source strategy games (11k+ GitHub stars).
Why Use It
It is the best free way to play a modern Civilization-style game, especially on mobile where the commercial Civ titles are paid. Unciv brings the full 4X experience to phones and old computers with no cost, no ads and no sign-up. Because the code and rulesets are open, you can learn how a 4X engine is built and tailor the game to your own rules; and if you like turn-based strategy, the smooth late-game performance means long campaigns stay enjoyable rather than grinding.
Use Cases
- Playing a full Civilization V-style campaign on an Android phone or tablet, free, offline and without ads.
- Long single-player strategy sessions on low-spec desktops and laptops where commercial strategy games won’t run.
- Turn-based multiplayer games with friends on a self-hosted UncivServer.
- Modding and learning: experimenting with custom rulesets, civs and scenarios on an open, well-structured Kotlin codebase.
