Thrive
Overview
Thrive is a free and open source evolution game in which you guide a single species from a microscopic cell in the primordial ocean to the space age and beyond. It is developed by Revolutionary Games, an open-source studio of volunteer programmers, artists and science enthusiasts working under the non-profit association Revolutionary Games Studio ry. The game is split into eight stages — Microbe, Multicellular, Macroscopic, Aware, Awakening, Society, Industrial and Space — and each one adds a new layer of control, from editing your cell’s organelles to steering an industrial civilisation off its homeworld. Thrive is written in C# on the Godot engine, and its two stated goals are to make compelling, intelligent gameplay and to stay as scientifically accurate as it can while doing so.
Key Features
- Microbe stage with a full organelle editor — the stage the game has today: build and mutate a cell from structural, protein and external parts, spending mutation points on cytoplasm, metabolosomes, flagella, pili, cilia, toxins, membranes and more, then watch the choices play out under water.
- A real chemistry simulation — glucose, ammonia, phosphate, hydrogen sulfide and iron drift through the water as compound clouds; you scoop them up, store them, and balance energy (ATP) production against movement cost rather than collecting abstract pickups.
- Detailed environmental simulation — each patch tracks oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, temperature, light level and pressure that shift with depth, volcanic vents and the day/night cycle, and those numbers change which organelles pay off.
- Auto-evo — every other species in the world evolves on its own between your turns, so the ecosystem you meet in the next generation is a response to how you played, not a fixed script (the game even predicts the outcome and shows its reasoning).
- Scientific grounding — the biology follows known theory as closely as playability allows, and each of the eight planned stages is being filled in as a distinct game layer rather than a set of mini-games.
- Part of a broader vision — the Microbe stage is the complete, polished part today; Multicellular and the later stages are in active development and are added to incrementally, which is exactly what the open development model lets you follow and influence.
- Genuinely open development — the whole project lives on GitHub, translations are crowd-sourced, and the game supports mods (with an explicit licence exception that lets mods be released under terms of your choosing).
- Free to play, easy to install — free releases plus a dedicated Thrive Launcher that downloads and unpacks the latest build, or buy it on Steam or Fanatical if you would rather fund development directly.
Why Use It
Thrive is the open-source answer to the evolution game Spore promised and never delivered. Instead of a series of disconnected mini-games it simulates the creature and the world around it, and it does so in the open: the code, the assets, the roadmap and the science discussions are all public. It runs natively on Linux, which is still rare for a large 3D life-simulation game, and because it is free software you can build it yourself, mod it, translate it or ship it to machines where commercial games cannot be installed. If you have ever wanted to design an organism and then watch a world of other organisms respond to it, this is the project to watch and play.
Use Cases
- 🧬 Playing a complete evolution sandbox in the Microbe stage — designing cells, surviving predators and steering a lineage toward intelligence.
- 🌍 Teaching biology and evolution concepts with a game whose simulation and taxonomy are deliberately grounded in real science.
- 💻 Running a modern 3D game natively on Linux without a launcher, DRM or a store client.
- 🛠️ Modding or translating a FOSS game and following a genuinely open development process on GitHub and the community forums.
- 📦 Distributing a fully free game to schools, labs or locked-down machines where commercial games cannot be installed.
Platforms
Windows, Linux and macOS. Distributions are published as free downloads on the project’s GitHub releases and can be installed and updated through the dedicated Thrive Launcher, and the game is also sold on Steam and Fanatical to fund development. Saved and configuration data follow the usual per-OS conventions.
Licence
Open source — GNU General Public License v3.0 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later) for the source code. The project’s LICENSE.txt grants the GPL “either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version”, and adds a special exception so that independent modules loaded dynamically at runtime (game mods) may be distributed under terms of your own choosing.
