Open edX

Open edX

Open edX is the open-source online learning platform originally developed for the MITx project and open-sourced by edX in June 2013. Built on Python with the Django web framework, it is maintained by the Axim Collaborative, the non-profit created by Harvard and MIT. Hundreds of organizations worldwide, including edX itself, use it to run online courses, instructor-led courses, degree programs and self-paced learning.

Key Features

  • XBlock architecture — Modular content components (XBlocks) allowing custom courseware components and pluggable extensions.
  • Studio authoring environment — Course authoring tool for building structured course units, videos, exercises and assessments.
  • LMS learner experience — Learner-facing courseware with discussion forums, progress tracking and certificate generation.
  • MOOC and degree-program scale — Proven deployments serving hundreds of thousands of regular users, including the edx.org installation with 3000+ courses.
  • Named releases — Regular community releases (e.g. Sumac, Teak, Ulmo) with a defined build-test-release cycle and extensive documentation.
  • Open APIs and integration — REST APIs and Apache-licensed API libraries for integrating external systems.
  • Multilingual support — Platform available in 14 languages with community-driven translation working groups.
  • Self-hosted deployment — Organizations can install and run the platform on their own infrastructure, commonly via Docker with the Tutor tooling.

Why Use Open edX?

Open edX is the engine behind edx.org, proven at massive scale, and fully self-hostable. Its XBlock architecture makes courseware genuinely extensible, while named community releases and the Tutor deployment tooling lower the barrier for institutions that want their own MOOC-grade platform without vendor lock-in.

Use Cases

  • Universities and MOOC providers launching online courses, degree programs and certificates at scale.
  • Organizations building custom, self-hosted online learning platforms with the XBlock ecosystem.
  • Educators authoring structured, interactive courseware with Studio and reaching learners worldwide.
