ILIAS

ILIAS

ILIAS (Integrated Learning, Information and Work Cooperation System) is an open-source web-based learning management system developed in PHP, first published as open source in 2000. It began at the University of Cologne and was the first open-source LMS to reach full SCORM 1.2 compliance. ILIAS supports learning content management, collaboration, communication, evaluation and assessment, and is coordinated by the non-profit ILIAS Society with an international community.

Key Features

  • Repository-based content model — Courses, materials and resources are organized like a library, letting content be shared beyond locked course walls.
  • Personal desktop — Each user’s customized workplace for selected courses, forums, email, tagging, calendar, e-portfolio and blogs.
  • SCORM 2004 compliance — Full SCORM 1.2 and 2004 compliance for importing and running standard e-learning content.
  • Assessments and exercises — Built-in test, survey and assessment tools integrated into courses.
  • Collaboration tools — Groups, wikis, forums and cooperative working environments for communication and group learning.
  • E-portfolio and competency tracking — Learner portfolios and competence tracking to document skills over time.
  • Open knowledge platform — Content can be made available to non-registered users, supporting public-facing knowledge sharing.
  • Community-governed development — Direction set by the international ILIAS community and coordinated by the non-profit ILIAS Society.

Why Use ILIAS?

ILIAS stands out for its repository model: instead of locking content inside course walls, resources live in a shared library that can power public knowledge platforms as well as formal courses. Its SCORM 2004 compliance and e-portfolio tools make it a strong choice for higher education and public-sector training.

Use Cases

  • Universities and higher-education institutions delivering online courses, assessments and collaborative learning.
  • Public-sector and government organizations running continuing-education and training portals.
  • Organizations building an open knowledge platform with both registered courses and public content.
