OpenClonk
OpenClonk is a free, open-source multiplayer action–tactics game in which you control clonks — small yet nimble humanoid beings. A continuation of the classic shareware Clonk series, it blends mining, production lines and settlement-building with fast, fiddly melees across a destructible 2D landscape, and doubles as a versatile 2D game engine you can mod with its own C4Script language. Written in C++ and released under the ISC licence, OpenClonk runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, and its latest stable release is 8.1 (2018), available as the openclonk package on most Linux distributions.
Key Features
- Command your crew of clonks — direct small, robust humanoid characters across lush 2D side-view worlds built on fully destructible terrain.
- Mining, production and economy — excavate ores, set up production lines and grow your base with structures such as walls, factories and windmills.
- Fast-paced melees — the classic Clonk blend of The Settlers and Worms: quick reflexes and sharp tactics decide arena-style brawls and gem-grabbing races.
- Powerful C4Script engine — the whole game is scriptable; create your own scenarios, objects and complete mods in a C-style language.
- Bundled map editor — design and play your own maps collaboratively in-game, backed by extra tools like the C4DT Eclipse plugin and Windmill.
- Single-player and multiplayer — play tutorials and mission scenarios solo, or join games over LAN and the internet via the OpenClonk masterserver and league.
- Cross-platform — native builds for Linux, Windows and macOS.
Why Use OpenClonk?
OpenClonk is a genuine 100% free and open-source game with no storefront, accounts or microtransactions. The engine and content are fully moddable, a community of players continues to create scenarios and mods, and you can install it straight from your Linux distribution’s package manager. If you enjoyed the original Clonk titles, OpenClonk is their freely-licensed, actively maintained successor.
Use Cases
- Local or online multiplayer fun — melee brawls, gem-grabbing races and cooperative settlement-building with friends.
- Sandbox building and survival — mine, farm and construct an underground or surface base at your own pace.
- Creative modding — write C4Script scenarios and objects, design maps with the in-game editor and share them with the community.
- Learning game scripting — the readable, scriptable engine and in-game tutorials make it a friendly way to explore how a game is put together.
