Overview
K-9 Mail is a free and open-source email client for Android, designed as a powerful alternative to stock email apps. Originally created by programmer Jesse Vincent in 2008, the project gained widespread adoption and became the most popular open-source email client on the platform. Since October 2024, K-9 Mail has been renamed to Thunderbird for Android following its acquisition by the Mozilla Foundation’s Thunderbird team, but the legacy name remains widely recognised. It supports both POP3 and IMAP protocols with IMAP IDLE for real-time push notifications, and offers features typically found only in desktop email clients.
