AAAAXY

AAAAXY

AAAAXY is a nonlinear 2D puzzle platformer built around impossible spaces. Its levels are woven from non-Euclidean geometry — corridors that loop back on themselves, rooms that are bigger on the inside, and worlds that refuse to obey your sense of direction. You play as a small orange block navigating a “World of Wicked Weirdness”, where the goal is less a single finish line and more what you decide to do along the way.

Developed by divVerent (the creator behind the Xonotic shooter project) and written in Go with a custom engine, AAAAXY is a free and open source game that has been in continuous development since 2020. It has a deliberately relaxed structure: you are encouraged to set your own goals, and exploration is rewarded with secrets, memes and a fair amount of self-aware trolling.

Key Features

  • Nonlinear level design — a large interconnected world you can tackle in almost any order, rather than a fixed sequence of stages.
  • Impossible (non-Euclidean) spaces — geometry that bends, wraps and connects in ways that genuinely disorient you, including Klein bottles and other topological oddities.
  • Set-your-own-goals structure — the game openly encourages you to pick a personal objective rather than chase a single ending.
  • Exploration rewards — secrets, Easter eggs and hidden rooms tucked away for players who stray off the obvious path.
  • Wide platform coverage — desktop, mobile and browser builds from the same source tree.
  • Multilingual — the interface and dialogue are available in Arabic, Belarusian, Simplified Chinese, English, German, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese and Ukrainian.
  • Free and open source — the full engine and game content are published under the Apache License 2.0, with public continuous integration and continuous benchmarking.

Why Use It

AAAAXY stands out from the crowded 2D platformer genre by making disorientation the point. Instead of practising a short level until you have it memorised, you gradually build a mental map of a world that deliberately refuses to be mappable, and the satisfaction comes from the moment the impossible layout finally clicks. It is charming rather than punishing, runs on very modest hardware, and — because the engine and assets are open source — it is a genuinely free game with no in-app purchases, advertising or account requirements.

Use Cases

  • Playing a full, complete puzzle platformer that costs nothing and collects no data.
  • A short session to reach the ending (roughly 15 minutes for a skilled player) or a full playthrough (about an hour) — the game respects your time.
  • A relaxed, long-form exploration game for players who enjoy secrets and hidden areas (a first-time run is typically 4–6 hours).
  • Running a lightweight, open source game on Linux, a low-spec laptop, a phone or even directly in a web browser.
  • Examining a well-documented open source Go game engine for anyone interested in how non-Euclidean geometry is implemented in a 2D engine.

Platforms

  • Linux — Flathub, Snap Store, itch.io and GitHub releases (x86_64 AppImage and ZIP).
  • Windows — official GitHub and itch.io builds (x86_64 and x86 ZIP).
  • macOS — GitHub and itch.io builds (Intel and Apple Silicon in one archive).
  • Android — F-Droid and Google Play.
  • iOS — App Store.
  • HTML5 / WebAssembly — a browser build is available, though the developers note it can be slow and the installable builds are recommended for full performance.

Licence

Open source — Apache License 2.0. The engine and game content are released under Apache-2.0, so the game is free to download, play, study and modify. Source: github.com/divVerent/aaaaxy.
