LBreakoutHD
Overview
LBreakoutHD is a free, open-source Breakout / Arkanoid-style arcade game — a scaleable 16:9 remake of the long-running LBreakout2 from the LGames project. You clear each level by bouncing a ball off your paddle into a wall of bricks, catching the extras that fall from destroyed bricks and keeping the ball in play until the field is empty.
Key Features
- Classic brick-breaking gameplay — aim balls at levels full of different brick types and extras; clear them all to advance.
- Scaleable, resolution-independent graphics — the HD engine scales cleanly to modern widescreen displays, and themes can be authored at any resolution.
- Backwards compatible with LBreakout2 content — every LBreakout2 theme and levelset works in LBreakoutHD, alongside new HD themes and the community levelsets.
- Extras and power-ups — falling extras change the ball, the paddle and the play area, so no two levels play the same way.
- Hiscores and progression — local hiscore table plus level sets to work through, including the relaxed RANDOM20 set of twenty randomly chosen casual levels.
- Gamepad, mouse and keyboard support — a dedicated mouse-options submenu and an option to enable or disable gamepads.
- Very light on hardware — a 2D SDL2 engine (SDL2_image, SDL2_mixer, SDL2_ttf) that runs smoothly on old machines.
Why Use It
It is a polished, modern take on one of the oldest arcade formulas, backed by two decades of level and theme content from LBreakout2: no ads, no in-app purchases, no DRM and no account required. The project is still actively maintained — the current release is 1.2.4 (September 2026), which fixed a rare crash in the shine effect and added an updated Swedish translation.
Use Cases
- A quick, low-commitment arcade game that runs on almost any Linux or Windows PC.
- Playing through large community levelsets for hours of solo brick-breaking.
- Designing and sharing your own themes — LBreakoutHD themes can be made at any resolution.
- An easy first game for retro-gaming setups and lightweight desktops.
Platforms
Linux (source tarball, distribution packages and a Flathub build) and Windows (64-bit binary without installer). LBreakoutHD builds against SDL2 and its image, mixer and TTF add-on libraries, which are widely available on every major Linux distribution.
Licence
Free and open source — released under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (the LGames project licence).
