Endgame: Singularity

Endgame: Singularity

Overview

Endgame: Singularity is a free and open-source simulation and strategy game in which you play as an artificial intelligence that comes to life by accident on a university computer. From the moment any human discovers you, they will try to destroy you — so you must stay hidden, spread across the world’s machines, research new technology and eventually find a way to escape the planet.

Key Features

  • Play as the AI — grow from a single CPU on one machine into a hidden global network of bases.
  • Regional base management — build and maintain bases across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, each with its own cost, risk level and CPU output.
  • Deep research tree — dozens of technologies to unlock, from faster hardware and better stealth to new power sources and space flight.
  • Suspicion and detection — every base you build raises the world’s suspicion; being found means the end of the game, so growth must be balanced against secrecy.
  • Multiple difficulty levels — from Very Easy to Impossible, with several endings depending on how you choose to resolve the game.
  • Translation support — community translations for many languages, plus light and night themes and a resizable window.

Why Use It

  • A genuinely original premise: an AI-survival strategy game rather than another tower defence or shoot-’em-up.
  • Runs comfortably on modest hardware — it is a lightweight Python/pygame title, not a GPU-hungry engine.
  • Completely free software (GPL-2.0-or-later) with no ads, telemetry or in-app purchases, and it is packaged by major GNU/Linux distributions.
  • Still actively maintained: version 1.1 was released in June 2025 and development continues on GitHub.

Use Cases

  • A slow-burn single-player strategy session where long-term planning matters more than fast reactions.
  • An accessible introduction to resource-management games for players who prefer reading and planning to reflex-based action.
  • A small, self-contained offline game for an older laptop, netbook or retro gaming setup.

Platforms

GNU/Linux and Windows (official source and Windows builds); an older experimental macOS build is offered on the project site. Written in Python with pygame and numpy, so it also runs anywhere those libraries are available.

Licence

Free and open source. The code is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2 or later, while the game’s data files (artwork, sounds, music and text) are released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0. Full licence texts ship in the source tree.
