Daimonin

Overview

Daimonin is a free, open-source 2D isometric MMORPG built on the SDL framework and in development since 2002. It has been free to play from the start: the official public server costs nothing and the client and server source code is published under the GNU General Public License. A newer Unity-based 3D client is also in development.

Key Features

  • Classic 2D isometric MMORPG play — a tile-based world of wilderness, towns and dungeons, with persistent characters, stats, skills and spells, NPCs, merchants and quests, all driven through a compact SDL client.
  • Free public server — the official world at daimonin.org is open to everyone; create an account and connect, with no purchase, subscription or ads.
  • Fully open source — the GPL covers the client and server engine, so you can read it, fork it or run your own world. (The game’s maps, quests and artwork keep their own licences.)
  • Built to be extended — the project invites players to create maps, write quests, draw art and compose music, and even to work on the server engine itself.
  • Cross-platform — native SDL clients for Windows, macOS and Linux/X11.
  • Still maintained — the main server was updated to 0.11.1-c in August 2026, focusing on procedural dungeon loot and mob scaling, and development continues.

Why Use It

It is one of the longest-running free MMORPGs you can still join today: no purchase, no subscription and no locked-down client — and because it is GPL-licensed throughout, it doubles as a readable case study of how an MMO client and server fit together. Its small SDL client runs comfortably on old hardware.

Use Cases

  • Playing a persistent online RPG with a small, long-standing community.
  • Learning MMO client/server architecture from open, GPL-licensed source code.
  • Running a private Daimonin server for friends using the open-source engine.
  • Contributing maps, quests, artwork, music or code to a community project.

Platforms

Windows, macOS and Linux/X11 (SDL). The client and server are updated together, and the world supports many interface languages.

Licence

Free and open source — the client and server code are licensed under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (GPL-2.0). The bundled game-world files (maps and quests) and the artwork are copyrighted by Daimonin and its artists rather than covered by the GPL, so a fork cannot simply clone the existing world.
