GPL-2.0
Warfork
Warfork is a free, fast-paced arena first-person shooter built for speed, aim, movement and above all competitive play. It is the modern community continuation of Warsow, running on the Qfusion engine — an open-source fork of id Tech 2 (the Quake II engine) — and it is developed in the open by Team Forbidden. There are no levels to grind, no unlockable weapons and no microtransactions: every player starts a match on equal footing, with skill, positioning and movement technique deciding the outcome.
Key Features
- Trickjump movement — strafe-jumping, bunny hopping, dashing, wall-jumping and crouch-sliding reward mastery and give the game its distinctive pace
- Classic arena arsenal — Gunblade (with an alternate Bladegun mode), Machinegun, Riot Gun (shotgun), Grenade Launcher, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Gun, Laser Gun and Electrobolt, plus the one-shot Instagun for instagib rulesets
- Twelve+ game modes — Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Duel, Capture the Flag, CTF Tactics, Clan Arena, Bomb, Defuse All, Headhunt, Race and Rekt, with a built-in Tutorial gametype
- Weapon drops and pickups — items, armour and power-ups are timed on the map, so map control and item timing matter as much as raw aim
- Competitive tooling — built-in demo recording, spectator mode, match timers and a dedicated-server binary for tournaments, leagues and community ladders
- Steam Workshop content — community maps, textures and HUDs distributed through Steam Workshop support
- Multi-platform — native Windows, Linux and macOS builds, playable free via Steam or as a standalone download
- No gimmicks — no levelling, no purchasable weapons, no gory content; the design brief is a pure skill-based shooter
Why Use Warfork?
Warfork does one thing and does it well: arena deathmatch with an exceptionally high skill ceiling. Because the engine is GPL-licensed Qfusion code, the project can be studied, forked and modified — and the free texture and soundpack repositories published alongside it make it a realistic base for other open-source shooters. It runs on modest hardware, it is genuinely free (no pay-to-win, no battle pass), and it works on Linux natively, which is rare for a live multiplayer FPS.
Use Cases
- Competitive online arena FPS play — duel, CTF and clan arena on public servers and community ladders
- LAN parties and tournaments with self-hosted dedicated servers
- Learning (or teaching) classic strafe-jump style FPS movement
- Playing a fast online shooter on Linux without Proton or a Windows dual-boot
- Studying or modding a complete GPL-licensed 3D game engine and its game-logic module
Platforms
Linux · Windows · macOS — free on Steam and available as a standalone download from the official site
Licence
Open source. The Qfusion engine and Warfork game code are licensed under the GNU General Public License v2 (or later). Game assets are published under their own permissive terms — the project maintains dedicated CC0 / CC BY-SA free texture and soundpack repositories so the whole game can be redistributed freely.
