Globulation 2
Overview
Globulation 2 is a free and open-source real-time strategy game built around a simple idea: you set the priorities, and your units get on with the work. Instead of clicking every worker through every task, you place flags and draw areas on the map — a gathering zone here, a farming area there, a defensive line to hold — and the autonomous “globules” allocate themselves to the job. It removes the micromanagement that defines most RTS games while keeping the base-building, expansion and combat that make the genre satisfying.
Key Features
- Autonomous units — globules decide their own tasks, so you command by setting priorities rather than issuing unit-by-unit orders.
- Flag and area system — designate gathering, farming, clearing, defence and forbidden zones to shape your colony’s behaviour without constant input.
- Classic RTS economy and combat — harvest resources, expand your settlement, raise buildings and fight rival colonies.
- Single player and multiplayer — campaigns and tutorials, plus LAN and online matches via the Globulation 2 online platform.
- Built-in editors — map and script editors let you build your own scenarios and custom game modes.
- Plays in the browser — the current build ships a WebAssembly client alongside the native release, so you can try it without installing anything.
Why Use It
Globulation 2 is a genuinely different take on the RTS formula. Where most games in the genre reward fast clicking and hotkey mastery, Globulation 2 rewards planning: you describe the colony you want and the game executes it. It is also unusually portable for a strategy game — a single release covers Linux, Windows, macOS, Android and the browser.
Use Cases
- A casual, low-stress RTS session when you want strategy without click-heavy micro.
- Introducing newcomers to real-time strategy through the tutorial and campaign.
- LAN or online multiplayer with friends on mixed operating systems.
- Making your own maps and scenarios with the bundled editors.
Platforms
Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and any modern web browser (WebAssembly client). Source builds are also available for packagers.

Free and open source — GNU General Public License v3.0 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later). The game engine is written in C++ and developed in the open.
