Overview
Armagetron Advanced is a free, open-source 3D lightcycle game — the “Tron clone in 3D” whose tagline it has carried since the beginning. You ride a lightcycle that can never stop and never slow down: it turns only at right angles and leaves a solid wall of light behind it. Touch a wall and you are out, and the last cycle still moving wins the round.
The project is the official continuation of Armagetron by Manuel Moos (z-man), registered in June 2004, and it has grown from a two-player arcade homage into an online multiplayer game with dedicated servers, team modes and a long-running competitive scene. Multiplayer is the point: servers host up to 16 cycles in one arena at a time, with chat, spectators, team colours and an in-game server browser.
Latest release: 0.2.9.3.1 (October 2026). Development is active — the source tree received commits in October 2026.
Key Features
- Authentic lightcycle physics — 90-degree steering, no braking, and a lethal trail behind every cycle. “Rubber” gives you a fraction of a second of grace to squeeze in a turn, and the amount of rubber is a server setting that shapes the whole feel of play, from twitchy no-rubber duels to forgiving high-rubber arenas.
- Online multiplayer built in — a server browser lists public servers by name, mode and player count, so you are one click from a game. There is no account to create and no matchmaking queue to sit in.
- Host your own server — a separate headless dedicated server binary ships for Linux, macOS and Windows, so a persistent community server can run on a small box or in a container (the project publishes Alpine/Docker builds as well).
- Team and solo game modes — Fortress (capture the enemy zone while defending your own), Sumo (stay inside the shrinking zone and force everyone else out), fortress and flag variants, plus classic Free-for-all/Deathmatch and Last Man Standing.
- Advanced AI bots — the bundled bots are good enough to fill a server, practise against, or keep a small LAN game interesting.
- Customisable content — custom maps, “moviepacks” (replacement texture and audio packs), alternate models and reworked HUD layouts are all data-driven and easy to drop in.
- Runs on modest hardware — a compact C++/OpenGL/SDL engine that is happy on old laptops and single-board computers; the project publishes Raspberry Pi guidance.
- Cross-platform, actively maintained — native Windows, macOS and Linux builds, plus AppImage, Flatpak and distro packages (see Platforms).
Why Use It
Armagetron Advanced has been continuously maintained for over twenty years — long enough to have a real community, established etiquette, tournaments and its own wiki of servers, clans and map repositories — while staying completely free: GPL-licensed source, no ads, no in-app purchases, no DRM and no account. Rounds last seconds, the skill ceiling is high, and because the dedicated server is a first-class part of the project you can host your own arena instead of renting somebody else’s. It is one of the few free-software games where the online game is the main event rather than an afterthought.
Use Cases
- A five-minute reflex game that starts in seconds and still rewards mastering it.
- Hosting a persistent public or clan server on a home box, VPS or container.
- Old or low-powered hardware — thin laptops, netbooks and single-board computers.
- LAN parties and office tournaments, with bots filling out a small player count.
- A free-software alternative to commercial online arcade games, with no account or store in the way.
- Modding: making maps, moviepacks and custom server settings.
Platforms
Windows, macOS (64-bit Intel builds; native Apple Silicon builds are in progress) and Linux — the project publishes AppImages for x86-64 and x86, a Flatpak on Flathub, an Ubuntu PPA, and the game is packaged in Debian (trixie ships 0.2.9.3.0). Ready-made builds also ship through Steam, where the game is sold under the name Retrocycles, and itch.io. Dedicated server builds are published for Linux, macOS and Windows, and the source tarball builds anywhere the SDL/OpenGL dependencies are available, including Raspberry Pi.
Licence
Free and open source — GNU General Public License v2.0 (GPL-2.0). The project states that the game is released under the GPL, and the source tree carries the GPL v2 text in COPYING.txt. Development happens on GitLab, with mirrors on GitHub and Launchpad.
