Rigs of Rods

Rigs of Rods

Rigs of Rods (RoR) is a free and open-source vehicle simulator built on soft-body physics. In development since 2005, it simulates the real-time motion, deformation and destruction of vehicles using a flexible beam-based physics engine — so frames flex, bend and break rather than acting like rigid blocks. You can drive everything from cars and trucks to trains, boats, aircraft and heavy machinery across a wide range of community-built terrains.

Key Features

  • Soft-body physics — simulated beams deform, flex and snap in real time, so crashes, load stress and suspension behave like real materials
  • Vehicles of all kinds — cars, trucks, trains, boats, helicopters, aeroplanes and heavy plant equipment, each built from multi-node soft structures
  • Intuitive gameplay — walk your driver around, enter and exit vehicles, and spawn several at once
  • Flexible control schemes — from arcade-style keyboard driving up to full gamepad, racing wheel and pedal setups
  • Multiplayer — dedicated servers plus an in-game server browser for driving together online
  • Community content — a built-in browser for mods and terrains, with vehicle part swapping and AngelScript scripting
  • Cross-platform — playable on Windows, Linux and macOS

Why Use Rigs of Rods?

Rigs of Rods is one of the few simulators where car bodywork and truck frames genuinely crumple under impact, thanks to its soft-body physics model. It is completely free, with no paywalls or in-app purchases, and a large, active community that keeps creating new vehicles, terrains and game modes. Whether you want a relaxed off-road drive or to push a heavy truck chassis to its breaking point, everything is in one sandbox.

Use Cases

  • Casual driving and off-road exploration across community-built terrains
  • Experimenting with vehicle behaviour, suspension and structural failure in a safe sandbox
  • Building and scripting custom vehicles, mods and terrains
  • Multiplayer sessions — convoys, stunts and obstacle courses with friends
  • Learning about rigid- and soft-body physics in an engaging, hands-on way
