AGPL-3.0🖥️ Self-hostable
SnappyMail
SnappyMail is a simple, modern and fast web-based email client written in PHP. It began as a fork of RainLoop and has become the actively maintained successor to that codebase, focusing on speed, a small footprint and security. It talks directly to any IMAP/SMTP server without requiring a database, so it is quick to drop in alongside an existing mail server such as Postfix, Dovecot or Mailcow.
Key Features
- No database required — settings are stored in JSON files and mail is read over IMAP/SMTP directly, keeping deployment and backups simple.
- Modern interface — responsive single-page webmail UI with dark mode and mobile-friendly layouts.
- Security focused — built-in two-factor authentication (TOTP), OpenPGP support and hardening against XSS, CSRF and clickjacking.
- Plugin and theme system — extend the interface with community plugins and themes.
- Multiple accounts — switch between several mail accounts from one interface, with an admin panel for multi-domain hosting.
- Large attachments — chunked uploads and streaming of large messages.
- Nextcloud integration — can be installed as a Nextcloud app for unified webmail and cloud access.
- Multi-language — interface available in many languages via community translations.
Why Use SnappyMail?
SnappyMail is the practical choice for anyone running their own mail server who wants a fast webmail front end without the PHP/MySQL overhead of heavier clients. Its file-based configuration makes it easy to place in front of an existing Dovecot/Postfix stack, and because it does not rely on a database it is simpler to back up and migrate. Users moving off the unmaintained RainLoop should look here first — SnappyMail is its maintained continuation.
Use Cases
- Self-hosted mail servers (Mailcow, Mail-in-a-Box, Postfix/Dovecot) that need a browser-based front end
- Hosting providers offering per-domain webmail to their customers
- Privacy-conscious users who want web access to their own IMAP accounts without a third-party provider
Platform
Web (PHP 7.4+ with the IMAP extension, served by nginx or Apache). Runs on Linux/BSD servers; it is not a desktop or mobile app.
