Conduit

Conduit

Conduit is a fast, simple, and reliable Matrix chat server written in Rust. Matrix is an open protocol for decentralised, federated communication, and Conduit aims to make running your own homeserver as easy as possible — using far less memory and CPU than the reference Synapse implementation while staying fully compatible with the wider Matrix network.

Key Features

  • Lightweight homeserver — Runs comfortably on small VPS instances and even single-board computers.
  • Matrix protocol support — Full federation with other Matrix homeservers for decentralised chat.
  • Low resource usage — Written in Rust, Conduit uses a fraction of the memory of alternative implementations.
  • Simple setup — Quick to install and configure, with Docker images and binary releases available.
  • End-to-end encryption — Works with Matrix clients that support E2EE for private conversations.
  • Active community fork — Development continues in the conduwuit fork with frequent updates and fixes.

Why Use Conduit?

If you want to join the federated Matrix network but find the reference homeserver too heavy for your hardware, Conduit is the answer. It gives you full Matrix chat — rooms, direct messages, file sharing, and federation — on hardware where other servers struggle.

Use Cases

  • Self-hosters running Matrix on a Raspberry Pi or small VPS
  • Communities that want a personal homeserver federated with the wider Matrix network
  • Privacy-focused users who want control over their own chat server
  • Developers testing Matrix applications against a lightweight server
