TuxMath
Overview
TuxMath (short for Tux, of Math Command) is a free, open-source arcade game that drills mental arithmetic. You play Commander Tux, defending a squad of penguin friends in their igloos from comets that carry maths problems — you destroy each comet by typing the correct answer before it lands. Built by the volunteer Tux4Kids project since the early 2000s, it is packaged by nearly every major Linux distribution and has been translated into dozens of languages.
Key Features
- Arcade play — comets, asteroids and power-ups make arithmetic practice feel like a game rather than a worksheet.
- Math Command Training Academy — a structured series of lessons that introduces one operation at a time, from number typing and single-digit addition up to subtraction, multiplication, division and mixed review.
- Fleet Missions — campaign-style sequences that chain lessons together as objectives to complete.
- Factoroids — a second game activity (added in 1.7.0) where you blast rocks by factoring numbers and simplifying fractions.
- Custom games — choose the operations, number ranges, speed and number of comets to match a child’s level.
- Multiplayer — “Play With Friends” supports head-to-head play so a class or family can compete on the same machine or over a local network.
- Small and lightweight — runs on very modest or older hardware, and needs no account, no online connection and no purchase.
- Localised — dozens of UI translations thanks to the project’s gettext workflow.
Why Use It
Most maths practice software is a subscription, a browser game with ads, or a tablet app that phones home. TuxMath is a single small download that works offline, installs from your distribution’s package manager, and has no tracking or upsells at all — ideal for schools and parents who want arithmetic drills without strings attached. Because the source is open (GPL-3.0), anyone can adapt the lessons, translate it further or rebuild it for a specific curriculum.
Use Cases
- Primary-school arithmetic practice at home or in the classroom.
- Building mental-maths speed with timed arcade rounds.
- Reinforcing factors, multiples and fraction simplification through Factoroids.
- Reviving old hardware as a kids’ learning machine — the game runs on very low-end systems.
- Offline or low-connectivity environments where web-based learning tools are unusable.
