Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries
Overview
Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries (7KAA) is a free, open-source real-time strategy and empire-building game designed by Trevor Chan and originally published commercially by Enlight Software in 1997. In 2009 Enlight released the game under the GNU GPL and the community has maintained it ever since at 7kfans.com.
You start with a single village and compete against up to six AI rulers or other players for land, trade and peasants. Conquest is only one of the ways to win: you can also buy out your rivals with trade routes, or subvert them from within with spies and diplomacy.
Key Features
- Seven playable civilizations — Chinese, Persians, Japanese, Greeks, Normans, Vikings and Mayans, each with its own units and character.
- Real-time economy management — mine ore, manufacture goods, build markets and set up trade routes to bring gold into your coffers.
- Espionage and diplomacy — train spies to infiltrate rival courts (or keep them home as counter-intelligence), forge alliances, and betray them.
- Multiple paths to victory — win by force of arms, by guile and persuasion, or by economic domination.
- Technology and the mystic arts — have scientists research new weapons of war, or turn to the mystic arts and summon the aid of the gods.
- Multiplayer and skirmish — play against up to six AI opponents, or head-to-head over LAN or the internet with host-propagated game settings.
- Still maintained — release 2.15.7 (July 2025) brought further AI improvements, persistent scenario settings and an experimental Linux build.
- Cross-platform and lightweight — an SDL-based C++ engine with official Windows, macOS and Linux builds; a 1997-era 2D game that runs comfortably on old hardware.
Why Use It
It is a genuinely complete vintage RTS — deep economy, spies, trade and diplomacy — that costs nothing, carries no DRM, ads or account requirement, and is still being patched by its community nearly thirty years after release. The in-game tutorials and encyclopedia make it approachable despite its age.
Use Cases
- Single-player skirmishes against the improved community AI.
- Multiplayer games over LAN or the internet.
- Playing a classic 1997 strategy title on low-spec or older hardware.
- Studying a long-lived free software game project — the full C++ source is available.
Platforms
Windows, macOS and Linux (official builds published on SourceForge). The game is also packaged in Debian as 7kaa. Note that the paid Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries release on Steam (Enlight Software/Retroism, 2016) is a separate Windows commercial edition — the community 7KAA build is the free one described here. UI translations include English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Russian and Esperanto.
Licence
Free and open source — the game source is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (or later), released by the original publisher Enlight Software in 2009.
