NodeBB

NodeBB

NodeBB is forum software built for the modern web, powered by Node.js. It supports Redis, MongoDB or PostgreSQL as its database and uses web sockets for instant interactions and real-time notifications. NodeBB deliberately blends the two worlds of online discussion: it keeps the classic bulletin board format — categorical hierarchies, local user accounts and asynchronous messaging — while adding real-time streaming discussions, mobile responsiveness and rich RESTful read/write APIs. The project has been in active development since 2013 and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0, with a commercial sublicence available for use in non-free, restrictive environments.

Key Features

  • Real-time discussions — Web sockets deliver instant updates, live notifications and streaming conversations without page reloads.
  • Classic forum structure — Categories, topics and posts stay familiar to long-time forum users, so communities can migrate without a culture shock.
  • Flexible databases — Choose Redis, MongoDB or PostgreSQL to suit your existing infrastructure and administration skills.
  • Rich REST API — A documented read/write API makes it practical to build mobile apps, bots and integrations on top of the forum.
  • Plugins — A common core of functionality is extended through a large ecosystem of third-party plugins for extra features and integrations.
  • Theming engine — Templates extend the base theme and styling uses SCSS or CSS on top of Bootstrap 5; the minimalist Harmony theme works out of the box with no coding required.
  • Mobile responsive — Layouts are designed to work properly on phones and tablets as well as desktop browsers.
  • Quick deployment — A Docker Compose configuration brings up NodeBB and its required services in a couple of commands, with detailed documentation for production installs and upgrades.

Why Use NodeBB?

NodeBB is the option to pick when you want a traditional forum layout but a genuinely modern engine behind it. The Node.js and web socket architecture makes it feel fast and live — posts, replies, notifications and private messages appear instantly — while the plugin and theme systems let you shape the community over time instead of fighting fixed software. Because it supports PostgreSQL, MongoDB and Redis and exposes a full REST API, it slots neatly into existing infrastructure and tooling, and the GPL licence means no licence fees for ordinary self-hosted use.

Use Cases

  • Established forum communities moving off ageing bulletin board software without losing familiar structure
  • Projects and businesses wanting customer support forums with live notifications and a public API
  • Clans, fan groups and hobby communities that value instant interaction and easy custom theming
  • Developers integrating discussions into existing applications through NodeBB’s REST API and plugins

Alternatives

  • Discourse — A Ruby-based community platform with built-in chat, trust levels and a very large plugin ecosystem.
  • Flarum — Lightweight PHP forum software with a deliberately minimal, modern interface.
  • Lemmy — A federated link aggregator for communities that want to be part of the Fediverse.
  • Rocket.Chat — Self-hosted team messaging, a better fit for fast chat than threaded discussions.
  • phpBB — The classic PHP bulletin board, mature and highly extensible but without real-time features.
