Dolphin Emulator

Dolphin Emulator

Overview

Dolphin is a free and open-source emulator for Nintendo GameCube and Wii, widely regarded as one of the finest emulators ever created. First released in 2003, Dolphin has matured into a highly sophisticated emulator capable of running the entire GameCube and Wii libraries at high resolutions, with enhanced graphics, widescreen hacks, and performance far exceeding the original hardware.

Dolphin’s achievements include some of the most advanced emulation features in existence: it was the first emulator to implement GPU command buffer emulation, pioneered the use of dual-core emulation for performance, and supports full 4K/8K resolution rendering, anti-aliasing, texture packs, and custom shaders. Dolphin also supports online multiplayer through its proprietary netplay system with rollback, Wii Remote emulation (including motion controls via a real Wii Remote connected via Bluetooth), and the Game Boy Advance link cable emulation for specific titles. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, and is available in both stable and development (beta) builds.

Key Features

  • High-Resolution Rendering: Play GameCube and Wii games at 4K, 8K, or arbitrary resolutions with full anti-aliasing.
  • Dual-Core Emulation: Uses two CPU cores for emulation (DSP + CPU) for exceptional performance on modern hardware.
  • Netplay: Built-in netplay with rollback netcode for online multiplayer in local multiplayer games.
  • Wii Remote Emulation: Full Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and MotionPlus support with real or emulated controllers.
  • Texture & Shader Packs: Load custom high-resolution texture packs and GLSL shaders for enhanced visuals.
  • Save States & Cheats: Unlimited save state slots, Action Replay / Gecko cheat code support.
  • Game Boy Advance Link: Emulates the GBA-to-GameCube link cable for titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.
  • Widescreen & 16:9 Hacks: Force widescreen rendering in games originally designed for 4:3 displays.
