DDraceNetwork

Overview

DDraceNetwork (DDNet) is the actively maintained, free and open-source continuation of DDRace — a cooperative modification of the 2D shooter-platformer Teeworlds. Instead of competing, players work together: up to 128 people share a single server and help one another across thousands of community-built maps by freezing, unfreezing, hooking and boosting their teammates past obstacles until everyone reaches the finish.

Key Features

  • Cooperative platforming for up to 128 players on one server — the whole team has to make it to the finish.
  • Thousands of custom maps released through the built-in map catalogue, with global rankings and a points system shared across all official servers.
  • Official servers hosted around the world, plus international tournaments and clan play.
  • Full map editor and modding toolkit (map tools, automapper rules, tuning layers) for building your own levels.
  • Client and server ship in one package — you can run your own DDNet server with RCON, practice commands and file-based records.
  • Demo recording and playback, friends list, key-press display, skins, and community translations for many languages.
  • Actively developed: frequent releases, nightly builds and a large contributor community.

Why Use It

DDNet takes a fast, physical 2D platformer and turns it into a genuinely cooperative game rather than a deathmatch. It is completely free, has no ads, no paid maps and no in-game purchases, works on modest hardware, and has been continuously updated for over a decade. Because the client is the server, you can play on the official network or host a private server for friends with the same download.

Use Cases

  • Playing cooperative platforming with friends or strangers on public servers.
  • Competitive racing and tournament play with global rankings and personal best times.
  • Designing and sharing your own maps with the built-in editor.
  • Hosting a private DDNet server for a community, LAN party or classroom.
  • Playing in the browser via the WebAssembly build when you cannot install software.

Platforms

Windows (64-bit, 32-bit and ARM), Linux (x86 and x86-64), macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Android, and a browser build compiled to WebAssembly. Also distributed through Steam (app 412220), Flatpak (tw.ddnet.ddnet) and the Debian/Ubuntu package archives.

Licence

Free and open source. The source code is released under the zlib licence (Teeworlds, DDRace and DDNet copyrights), while the bundled game content in data/ is licensed CC BY-SA 3.0. Free to play, with no ads or paid content.
