Buildbot
Buildbot is a continuous integration and release automation framework written in Python. It lets you achieve software builds, unit tests, packaging, and deployment in a highly configurable, distributed manner, and it is known for being able to run complex build and test farms across many platforms from a single master.
Key Features
- Master/worker architecture — a central build master orchestrates many worker machines for parallel builds.
- Highly configurable — defined entirely in Python, giving unlimited flexibility for unusual workflows.
- Multi-VC support — works with Git, SVN, Mercurial, Perforce, and other version control systems.
- Flexible triggers — builds on commit, schedule, nightly, or triggered by other builds.
- Web interface — the Nine UI provides Grid, Waterfall, Console, and Build views of build status.
- Notifications — alert on build results via email, IRC, or webhooks.
- Step & result tracking — detailed logs, timeline of steps, and result summaries per build.
- Cross-platform workers — run workers on Linux, Windows, macOS, and other systems.
Why Use Buildbot?
Buildbot shines when you need full control over a complex, distributed build and test farm, such as testing a project across many operating systems and compiler versions simultaneously. Its Python-defined configuration is powerful for teams whose pipelines don’t fit simple YAML templates.
Use Cases
- Cross-platform build and test farms (Linux, Windows, macOS, BSD) from one master.
- Continuous integration for large C/C++, Python, and other multi-compiler projects.
- Automated release and packaging pipelines with fine-grained control.
- Research and embedded projects that need reproducible matrix builds.
