antiX Linux

antiX is a fast, lightweight, easy-to-install Linux distribution based on Debian Stable, designed to breathe new life into older computers. It is deliberately systemd-free and elogind-free, and ships with a choice of five independent init systems (runit by default, plus sysVinit, dinit, s6-rc and s6-66). With a recommended minimum of just 512MB RAM, antiX runs happily on modest hardware and can also serve as a fast-booting rescue system.

Key Features

  • systemd-free and elogind-free — uses eudev and a choice of five init systems (runit default, sysVinit, dinit, s6-rc, s6-66)
  • Runs on old hardware — recommended minimum of 512MB RAM; installs to a 7GB disk
  • Choice of flavours — antiX-full with a desktop and antiX-core for building a minimal system up yourself
  • Live USB with persistence — runs live from a USB stick, optionally saving changes and remastering your own version
  • Rescue-friendly — works as a fast-booting rescue disc
  • 32-bit and 64-bit — available for very old computers as well as current machines
  • Curated default apps — Firefox ESR, LibreOffice, Claws Mail, PipeWire (64-bit full) and more

Why Use antiX?

antiX is one of the best ways to keep a low-specified PC useful. It is light on resources, free of systemd and elogind, and flexible enough to run as an install, a live USB, or a rescue system — all without the bloat that drags down newer machines.

Use Cases

  • Reviving old laptops and desktops with low RAM and disk
  • Users who prefer a systemd-free system with a choice of init systems
  • Live, persistent USB systems and emergency rescue environments
