WebDesktop
WebDesktop is an open-source web-based desktop (windowing) system built with Vue on the front end and a Koa API on the back end. It simulates a full desktop OS in the browser — start menu, taskbar, desktop icons and application windows — and is designed to be self-hosted.
Key Features
- Browser windowing desktop — a start menu, taskbar, desktop icons and draggable app windows.
- Built-in applications — an app market, instant messenger, media player, weather, maps, translator and system settings.
- Virtual file system — organised files and folders with right-click context menus and browser keyboard shortcuts.
- Multi-user accounts — user management with RBAC-style roles and OAuth login options.
- Vue + Koa stack — a clean, modular architecture with the front end and API separated.
- Self-hostable — MIT-licensed source you can deploy on your own server.
Why Use WebDesktop?
It is a well-organised, actively maintained project if you want a straightforward web desktop you control. The Vue/Koa split makes it easy to extend with your own apps and users.
Use Cases
- Deploying a private web desktop for a team or community.
- Building a browser-based app store and windowed environment.
- Rapid prototyping of web-OS interfaces.
