daedalOS
daedalOS is a desktop environment that runs entirely in the browser (TypeScript + React). It brings a working file system, windowed apps, a terminal, a Winamp-style media player and dynamic wallpapers to any tab — with no server required.
Key Features
- In-browser file system — BrowserFS with support for the File System Access API, so you can open, save and organise files locally.
- Window manager — draggable, resizable, minimisable windows whose layout and state persist across sessions.
- Built-in apps — terminal, file explorer, Winamp-style media player, Paint, PDF viewer, Monaco editor, chat, IRC, DevTools and more.
- Media conversion — convert audio, video, photos and spreadsheets straight in the browser.
- Dynamic desktop — animated wallpapers, mouse-pointer themes and right-click actions such as set-as-wallpaper, archive and extract.
- Runs client-side — no backend or account; the whole environment runs locally and even works offline.
Why Use daedalOS?
It is a fast, beautifully polished example of what a browser can do. Everything runs on your machine, which means your files stay with you — ideal when you want a lightweight desktop experience without a server or account.
Use Cases
- A self-contained browser desktop for quick file browsing and editing.
- Experimenting with retro desktop UI and in-browser media players.
- A reference/starting point for building your own web desktop.
