Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden

Overview

Vaultwarden (formerly bitwarden_rs) is an alternative, self-hosted server implementation of the Bitwarden client API, written in Rust. It gives you full control of your password vault while remaining compatible with official Bitwarden clients on desktop, mobile, browser, and the web vault.

Key Features

  • Personal Vault: Store logins, cards, identities, and secure notes
  • Send: Share encrypted text and files with expiry
  • Attachments: Attach files securely to vault items
  • Self-Hosted: Full control of your data; lightweight to run (single binary/container)
  • Admin Backend: Dedicated admin panel for org management and diagnostics
  • Compatible: Works with official Bitwarden clients (mobile, desktop, browser, web)

Why Choose Vaultwarden?

Unlike the official Bitwarden server, which is resource-heavy, Vaultwarden is lightweight and easy to self-host on modest hardware. All encryption happens client-side; you keep ownership of every byte of your vault data.

Use Cases

Individuals, families, and small organizations that want a private, self-hosted Bitwarden-compatible password manager without the overhead of the full official server.

Platforms

Server: Linux, Docker / Podman containers, any host running the Rust binary. Clients: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, all major browsers.
