FOSS Face-Off: Real Ownership Through Open-Source Gaming

Why Gaming Ownership Matters

A recent discussion on Hacker News made one thing clear: the debate about physical vs. digital games misses the real issue. As the article’s author put it, it’s not about the format — it’s about who actually owns the games you buy.

When you purchase a game on Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox, or PlayStation, you’re not buying a game. You’re buying a revocable license. The platform holder can and has removed games from libraries, shut down servers, changed terms of service, and left thousands of dollars of purchases inaccessible. 2. Unreal Engine / Unity → Godot Engine

Most commercial games are built on Unreal Engine or Unity, both of which have shifted toward aggressive royalty models and revenue-sharing terms. Unreal Engine takes 5% of gross revenue above million; Unity’s runtime fee (later retracted after community backlash) was a stark reminder that proprietary engines can change their terms at any time, putting developers at risk.

Godot Engine is the leading open-source game engine, and it has matured dramatically in the last few years. The 4.x series introduced a Vulkan-based renderer, improved 2D and 3D workflows, a new tilemap system, and significant performance improvements. 3. Windows-Only Gaming → Linux + Steam Deck + Proton

Windows has been the dominant PC gaming platform for decades, but it’s a proprietary OS with an increasingly intrusive experience. Microsoft controls driver availability, telemetry collection, and eventually — end-of-life decisions that can break your gaming setup.

Linux gaming has undergone a revolution thanks to Valve’s investment in Proton (a compatibility layer based on Wine). As of 2026, over 80% of the top 1000 Steam games run on Linux with little or no configuration. The Steam Deck, running SteamOS (an Arch Linux derivative), has proven that Linux is not just viable for gaming — it’s often a better experience, with tighter performance optimisation and a suspend/resume feature that Windows handhelds can’t match.
